Ganderbal, Aug 26 (KNO): Despite a government-imposed ban on construction within 100 metres of the Srinagar-Leh Highway bypass, illegal structures, including shopping complexes, residential buildings and shops, have come up at several locations from Baroosa to Sonamarg in Ganderbal district. According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the restrictions were imposed to protect agricultural land and prevent violations of land-use regulations, the Ribbon Development Act and directions issued by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. However, residents allege that construction activity has continued unchecked at several locations. Since the completion of the bypass, areas including Baroosa, Wayil, Manigam, Lar, Kangan and Sonamarg have witnessed a rise in construction activity, with several structures reportedly coming up on agricultural land. “Whenever a local person puts up even a small tin shed, authorities are quick to take action, but large shopping complexes are being constructed openly near by SindhNallah. It raises questions about whether the same law applies to everyone,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident. Residents have urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough inspection of the entire highway stretch, including Sonamarg, and take action against all violations without discrimination. “The authorities must ensure that the law is enforced equally, irrespective of who owns the property. If illegal constructions continue, more people will be encouraged to violate the rules,” another resident said. Locals said unchecked construction could have long-term consequences for agricultural land, road safety, environmental protection and planned development along the highway. They appealed to the administration to identify illegal structures, verify construction permissions and take action against violators in accordance with the law—(KNO)
